Commissioning & independent technical support
Torven Marine collaborated with PIRIOU Vietnam, providing specialist engineering support during work associated with the sailing cargo vessel Atlantis.
The assignment called for practical technical investigation, commissioning assistance and support with resolving engineering issues. Working alongside the shipyard team, our focus was on understanding equipment behaviour, addressing technical challenges and helping progress the project towards dependable operation.
This collaboration reflects the responsive, hands-on engineering support Torven Marine provides to shipyards and vessel operators during commissioning and project delivery.
Examples of commissioning, troubleshooting and fault-finding work undertaken by Torven Marine’s engineering specialists, including technical investigation, operational verification and support through to handover.
Provided commissioning support for a marine oily water separator, including operational checks, verification of correct system response and practical instruction for the crew. Training covered normal operation, routine testing, alarm awareness and the procedures needed to maintain reliable performance and support pollution-prevention compliance.
Investigated a steering gear system exhibiting abnormal noise, vibration and hunting during operation. The work focused on observing the behaviour under operating conditions, examining the interaction between hydraulic and control components and narrowing down potential causes to guide corrective action and further verification.
Investigated a fault preventing the sewage treatment plant from operating as intended. The control-system issue was identified and rectified, followed by functional checks and commissioning of the equipment. Once satisfactory operation had been demonstrated, the system was presented to the owner’s representatives for acceptance.
Provided fault-finding and commissioning assistance on a reverse osmosis freshwater production unit experiencing an operational problem. Following systematic investigation, the fault was identified and rectified. The watermaker was then checked in operation and presented for acceptance, with attention to dependable freshwater production and correct system performance.

James served as Build Chief Engineer during the construction of M/Y Rahil at the Mariotti shipyard in Genoa. He was the only full-time member of the owner's build team continuously assigned to the project, working with the support and oversight of a senior build consultant who attended on a part-time basis.
His responsibilities extended across the complete build rather than being limited to machinery installation, including engineering systems, pipework, equipment installation, paint quality, fixtures and fittings, commissioning readiness and the practical coordination required to bring the finished vessel together.

James joined M/Y Netto II in July 2025 while the 80-metre vessel remained under construction. As owner-side Chief Engineer, he represented the vessel's long-term engineering interests throughout the final build, commissioning, acceptance and delivery phases.
His involvement extended beyond machinery commissioning. He worked directly with the yard and subcontractors to identify deficiencies, challenge incomplete or unsuitable work and ensure that engineering systems were delivered to a standard capable of supporting the vessel's operational life.

James joined Attila during the yacht's sale and transition to a new owner. With only one week to prepare the vessel for a passage from Monaco to Dubai, limited spares and a basic handover, he rapidly identified and rectified technical issues to meet a strict departure deadline.

James began his marine engineering career with Cunard, completing his engineering apprenticeship and subsequently serving aboard QE2 while she was the flagship of the British Merchant Navy. Working within a large, highly structured engineering department established the commercial standards, operational discipline and accountability that have underpinned his later work in the superyacht sector.
James gained new-build experience aboard the 138-metre M/Y Rising Sun, at the time one of the largest private yachts in the world. The project provided exposure to the scale, complexity and coordination required in major yacht construction.
